Last night, the Center for Emerging Markets (CEM) at Northeastern University celebrated the culmination of two years of its Srinivasan Family Awards student grant program with a reception attended by over a dozen past student and alumni awardees, as well as faculty and staff partners.

Supported by a generous gift from Venkat and Pratima Srinivasan, the Srinivasan Family Awards program allows undergraduate and graduate students at Northeastern University to conduct research, create a startup, take part in a service-learning project, organize a conference, or pursue another innovative project that addresses pressing problems in one or more emerging markets.

Since the program began in 2022, CEM has provided awards to 36 students pursuing 21 different projects impacting emerging markets around the world, with students representing nearly every college and school at Northeastern.

Among the highlights of last night's event were presentations from four past awardees, each showcasing their impactful projects:

Shreyas Mosurkal ‘23, Bouvé College of Health Sciences, performing research in Tiaty, Baringo County, Kenya, aiming to improve emergency medical care delivery to high-risk patients.

Zach Hoglund ‘24 and Katie Tschoepe ‘25, College of Engineering, representing Innovators for Global Health (IGH), designing low-cost medical devices for Ghanaian healthcare facilities and establishing partner chapters of IGH at the University of Ghana and Academic City University.

Dhwani Bhatt '27, College of Engineering, currently implementing a biodigester system in a school in Fort Portal, Uganda, to provide sustainable energy for cooking and lighting.

Allison Zlotnick '24 and Marisa Palace '24, D'Amore-McKim School of Business, organized a successful conference through TAMID in Novemebr 2022, focusing on Israel's startup ecosystem and how other emerging markets across the globe can learn from it.

A heartfelt thank you to Venkat Srinivasan, a longstanding supporter of CEM, and sponsor of the Srinivasan Family Awards program, for his invaluable presence and guidance to our students at the event. CEM eagerly anticipates the continued growth of this award program in the years to come.
