International students comprise more than 50% of graduate students at Northeastern University, with 4% identifying as Hispanic or Latinx. This number is poised to grow thanks to the newly launched Latin American Achievers Scholarship at the D'Amore-McKim School of Business.
This scholarship is designed to attract promising, high-achieving graduates of Latin American universities by offering up to 50% tuition coverage for students pursuing MBA and MS degrees at D'Amore-McKim. Importantly, no separate scholarship application is required, streamlining access to this opportunity.
Mary McNamara, Assistant Dean of Graduate Recruitment & Admissions, emphasized the significance of this initiative: “Increasing Latin American representation is crucial for fostering a truly global business perspective in our learning community. By empowering students from Latin America to ‘learn across borders,' we're preparing them to ‘lead with impact' in an interconnected and complex global economy.”
This focus on global leadership resonates deeply with students like Daniel Mendoza, who, although not a recipient of the scholarship, embodies the driven, high-achieving student that D'Amore-McKim aims to attract. Originally from Colombia with Venezuelan roots, Mendoza is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Business Analytics. He chose Northeastern “because of our growing reputation as a business school and the graduate co-op opportunities,” he explained.
D'Amore-McKim's strong network of industry connections and its signature focus on experiential learning is precisely what international students like Mendoza find invaluable. These opportunities allow students to integrate classroom learning with real-world work experience, giving them a competitive edge in the job market. “Big players in the labor market are interested in hiring Northeastern students, and we should continue to improve our reputation,” Mendoza noted.

While Mendoza's short-term objectives include acquiring new, valuable skills to propel his career in the U.S., his long-term vision is to return to Venezuela or Colombia as an entrepreneur, contributing to his community's growth. Mendoza's MS in Business Analytics program, which benefits from a STEM designation, also exemplifies why D'Amore-McKim is an attractive choice for international students.
The STEM designation allows students like him to work in the U.S. for up to 36 months after graduation, providing them with extended opportunities to gain crucial professional experience.
“D'Amore-McKim has been key in developing new skills that align with the job market,” said Mendoza, who is preparing to enter the analytics consulting industry after his December graduation.
