So much of today's networking is done online. Online professional networking can lead to opportunities and notable connections that may have been difficult or impossible to make in person.

When networking on social media, put the most effort into maintaining your profiles on professional sites such as LinkedIn. Make sure your profile page includes a professional headshot and a cover image that captures your career goals and interests.

What you need to know

  • Put your best and most professional foot forward when making virtual connections, just as you would if you were meeting in person
  • Your entire online presence is easily accessible to your existing connections as well as future ones
  • Posts, ‘likes' and comments can improve or harm your reputation, so stick to professional milestones, accomplishments, and expertise

Common LinkedIn profile questions

Ensure your LinkedIn profile is complete, truthful, and up to date. Select a professional photo, craft a compelling headline that captures your career aspirations, and detail your experiences and skills in the summary and experience sections. Recommendations from current and former colleagues and professors can boost your credibility in your field.

Complete the primary LinkedIn profile fields including industry and location, education, current and past positions, and a handful of skills. Your visibility can increase by including special projects, certifications, links to other portfolios, publications you've written or been featured in, volunteer experiences, and awards.

The best professional photo to use is a clear, high-quality headshot that you believe represents your best self. Your photo will help your connections recognize you. Select a “close-up” of your face because LinkedIn will use that image in various sizes for posts, comments, and messages you send. If your face is too small in the photo, it will be hard to see when LinkedIn displays your image in smaller sizes. Keep in mind that what makes a photo “professional” depends on your field. It's a solid strategy to review the profile photos of people currently in the job you wish to land next.

Share and comment on relevant industry news regularly. This will not only show your active involvement in your field but also increase your visibility in the network.

Personalize your request to connect by writing a note that references how you're connected or identifying common connections or interests. Follow up with a brief message about your aspirations and how you hope to engage with them.

Industry and alumni groups on LinkedIn can offer:

  • Networking: Connect with like-minded professionals for collaborations and job prospects
  • Knowledge sharing: Gain insights, stay updated on trends, and learn best practices
  • Professional development: Attend workshops and seminars to enhance skills and adapt to industry changes
  • Support system: Find mentors and peers for advice and encouragement
  • Access to opportunities: Gain exclusive access to events and job postings for career growth

When you first create your LinkedIn profile, the default URL will be a mix of numbers and letters. It is highly recommended to shorten and customize your URL. A custom public profile URL helps other members and recruiters identify your profile easily and connect with you.
