Rietzler's research revolves around the topics of innovation, entrepreneurship, and digitalization. In one research stream he investigates the processes and outcome effects of crowdsourcing as an innovation method. In the other research stream he examines how digitalization affects the professionalization of startups and its subsequent effects on employee retention. He teaches courses on innovation and strategy with an emphasis on their dynamics in a digital age.
