Q: What led you to change paths to pursue accounting?
A: I originally set out to pursue a business role that was both analytical and people-focused, but accounting was not initially on my radar because I assumed it was mostly solitary and numbers-driven. That changed quickly once I started networking on LinkedIn and speaking with professionals. I learned that accounting, especially audit, is highly collaborative and team-oriented and a great match for my strengths.
After college, I worked as an accounting assistant for a startup where I helped build its basic accounting framework from the ground up. That hands-on experience showed me how accounting supports every part of a business and confirmed this was the right path for me.
Q: What made D'Amore-McKim's MS in Accounting/MBA program stand out?
A: Once I decided to transition into accounting, I needed to bridge the gap between my broad business degree with a minor in Art History and the technical requirements of the field. D'Amore McKim's MS in Accounting/MBA program offered the perfect solution with specialized coursework, the credits needed for CPA eligibility, and the added value of an MBA to strengthen my long-term business expertise.
What really sealed the deal was the built-in corporate residency. The chance to work for three months at a Big Four accounting firm while building a professional network set this program apart and gave me confidence that I could launch a new career in accounting.
Q: Describe your corporate residency at a Big Four firm.
A: My three-month corporate residency at Deloitte as an Assurance Intern took place during the busy season, so the pace was fast and the learning curve was steep, but also incredibly rewarding. From day one, I was supported and guided step-by-step through my responsibilities, which included preparing work papers, drafting documents, and running tests on accounts, like lease and cash.
The core accounting classes at D'Amore-McKim were a huge help. They directly prepared me for the technical demands of the job, and I quickly developed strong attention to detail through tasks like document review and accuracy checks.
What really set me up for success at Deloitte was pre-residency support. Networking sessions and office tours with all the Big Four firms helped me build connections and enter Deloitte ready to hit the ground running. The combination of rigorous academics and experience made this residency a pivotal part of my journey into accounting.
Q: What made your coursework unique?
A: One of the aspects I valued most about the program was how it blended specialized accounting knowledge with broad business coursework. The MBA classes broadened my perspective in ways I didn't expect, showing me how accounting fits within every part of an organization.
Through courses like data science and marketing, I saw firsthand how different functions, from marketing campaign strategy to HR initiatives, influence financial outcomes. This broader perspective has made me a more well-rounded professional who can appreciate the full business environment and see far beyond the numbers. It prepares me not only for my first role but also for a dynamic, evolving career.
Q: What are your professional goals?
A: After graduation, I'll be joining Deloitte as an Audit Associate, and my immediate goal is to pass all four CPA exams, something the program's tailored classes have prepared me perfectly for. Long-term, I aim to continue in public accounting, focusing on audit, and become a manager at the firm. I'm also eager to explore different areas within accounting to find the specialization that best fits my strengths and interests.
Q: What advice would you give to future students?
A: My main advice is to prioritize self-care throughout the program. Earning a combined MS in Accounting/MBA is intense, but absolutely doable and incredibly rewarding. This program has been running for over 60 years, and many generations have come through it and emerged stronger for it. You can, too.
Just as important is to invest in your cohort. The people in your program will become your closest allies in school and throughout your career. Rely on them, build those friendships, and enjoy the journey together.
