Q: How has being a first-generation college graduate influenced you?

My identity as a first-generation graduate has been a driving force. I'm the very first in my family to graduate from college and pursue a graduate degree.

I come from a family of nurses. Originally, I thought I'd study psychology or physics, but I pivoted to finance and discovered I loved accounting—it felt like solving puzzles. I minored in creative writing, which allowed me to blend my love for storytelling with critical thinking. Both fields require creativity, problem-solving, and the ability to approach challenges from unique perspectives, so I've always balanced creative and analytical thinking.

Q: What made you choose the D'Amore-McKim MS in Accounting/MBA program?

The MS in Accounting/MBA program stood out because it offers a path to an accounting career for people without an accounting major. Even though I took every undergraduate accounting course offered, my school didn't offer it as a major. The curriculum was a great fit–comprehensive accounting, broad business fundamentals, and analytics concentration. The accelerated structure really appealed to me.

Returning to my hometown of Boston was a key part of my decision to pursue an MSA/MBA. After spending most of my young adult life in Kentucky, I wanted to return to Boston with a fresh perspective. In the long term, I hope to use my MSA/MBA to make an impact in philanthropic work, whether by running a foundation, nonprofit, or business. Gaining these skills here in Boston, where I'm passionate about giving back, was essential to my journey.

The program also emphasizes mentorship and networking, which has been valuable. I've connected with professionals and peers who inspire and challenge me. This experience has truly helped prepare me for my future career.

Q: What's it like being a Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholar?

Being a Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholar has been transformative and made my pursuit of a master's degree financially possible. Becoming a Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholar added a whole new layer of motivation. The Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholars Program covers 100% of my tuition and academic fees, which is incredible.

I feel a deep responsibility to make the most of this opportunity, both for myself and my community.

This scholarship has pushed me to give my all. It's not just about the financial support—though that's huge—but also about the sense of purpose and drive it instills. Knowing that the Deloitte Foundation created this program for students like me and Northeastern University believes in my potential has boosted my confidence and determination. I've been able to focus entirely on my studies and professional growth without financial stress.

Q: What challenges have you faced in the MS in Accounting/MBA program?

My biggest challenge in the MS in Accounting/MBA program was the pace—managing time and staying accountable. The work is manageable, but it requires smart management with your time and thoughtful decision-making. It's not just about working harder; it's about being strategic.

Another challenge is navigating relationships within the cohort. We see each other every day, and we have people from very different stages of life—some are fresh out of undergrad, while others have families and kids. Balancing professionalism with social bonding has been a learning experience, but it's also helped me grow.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?

I'm excited to jump straight into work! After 15 months of working on my master's, I'm ready to apply what I've learned. I'm ready to work hard and realize the career progression potential offered by this degree and a possible CPA certification. I'll sit for my CPA exam soon.

Entering this industry, with advancement opportunities, I'm looking forward to building savings and working toward some life goals—like a house and maybe a family. I'm 25, almost 26, and this program has given me the resources to help me create the future I've always wanted.

Q: What are your future career goals?

Public accounting is an interesting field, and I want to get as much experience as possible.  Long term, I'd love to explore my passion for community outreach. Whether that means working with nonprofits or even starting my own, I'm open to wherever this path takes me.

The Northeastern master's degree program has not only prepared me technically but also inspired me to think about how I can use my skills to give back to the community. There are so many ways to go with an accounting background, and I don't want to limit myself. For now, I'll focus on building my skills in the corporate world, and later I'll explore other avenues.

Q: What advice would you give to future students like yourself?

Just keep trying. No situation is as bad as it first seems, and tomorrow is always a new start. I know it sounds generic, but it's true. I wish someone had told me that earlier—and honestly, I still need to remind myself of it! But that's the best advice I can give – keep moving forward, no matter what.

The support and resources from the Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholars Program have given me the confidence to dream big and the tools to make those dreams a reality. If you're considering applying, I highly recommend it. This program can truly help transform your educational and professional journey, just like it has for me.
