Q: Why was an MS in Accounting/MBA from D'Amore-McKim the right choice?

A: I sought a clear path to a new career and was thrilled to find that the D'Amore-McKim program integrates professional experience into its curriculum. I wanted a program that emphasizes practical experience and effectively prepares me for a successful transition.

After working in education for a couple of years, I realized that I wanted a change—one that could provide a better work-life balance and a more livable wage. The MS in Accounting/MBA program is known for supporting career changers, which was important to me because I don't have a business background.

What really made D'Amore-McKim's program appealing was the blend of in-person learning and corporate residency. Initially, I didn't think it mattered whether the program was online or in-person. However, I appreciated the in-person format much more than I expected. The community feel, the cohort dynamic, and the chance to learn from professors and peers face-to-face have been invaluable.

Q: As an educator, what motivated you to pursue business?

A: Deciding to change careers was tough, but the best things can be difficult. I truly loved teaching and was passionate about my students, but the schools I worked for lacked the resources to support staff and students fully. I worked incredibly long hours—lesson planning and grading after school hours, sometimes on weekends, and without recognition.

I was living at home with my parents, and I knew I wouldn't be able to meet my long-term goals financially if I stayed in education. I wanted to explore new opportunities in a dynamic city like Boston and earn a wage to support my future.

I'm still passionate about education, and if I decide to return to the field, I'll have a new set of skills that I could use to help schools improve their systems or find better ways to manage resources.

Q: How did your corporate residency bolster your experience?

A: My corporate residency at KPMG was a game-changer, especially since I didn't have prior business experience. I got to put everything I learned in the classroom—like audit procedures and financial reporting—into real-world projects. From day one, I felt like part of the team, working with colleagues and contributing to actual client projects. The experience helped me connect what I learned in theory to real-world practice, boosting my confidence and giving me hands-on skills I couldn't get from coursework alone. It was an invaluable way to prepare for my career, and I'm excited to return to KPMG after graduation, feeling ready to make an impact.

Q: What part of the program will be most useful in your new role at KPMG?

A: Several courses were directly relevant to my work as an audit associate at KPMG. For instance, in our audit course, we analyzed real-world cases using US GAAP and codification. Learning to interpret accounting policies and apply them in real-world scenarios was eye-opening and essential for anyone entering public accounting.

Our corporate governance class also prepared me to work in a global firm. We learned how to collaborate with component auditors who may be based in different countries, which is something I'll definitely encounter at KPMG. The emphasis on teamwork and communicating and collaborating across borders will be extremely important.

Q: What are your professional goals?

A: My immediate goals are to pass the CPA exam and begin my career at KPMG in October. The MS in Accounting/MBA program has prepared me well for the technical side of public accounting, especially in audit and financial reporting. But just as important, I've learned the value of teamwork and collaboration. I've learned how to work with others on complex projects, which will be key at KPMG, where teamwork is so important.

In the long term, I hope to stay connected with D'Amore-McKim and help other career changers navigate a new accounting career. Whether I stay at KPMG or explore opportunities in the industry or nonprofits, I feel confident that this program has set me up for success.

Q: What advice would you give to anyone considering a business degree?

A: My advice would be to take the leap with an open mind and a lot of curiosity. Don't be afraid to explore a completely new field. You might be surprised at what you're capable of. Looking back, I can hardly believe how far I've come—from studying English at a small college to now preparing to work at a global accounting firm. The relationships and connections you build during the program are priceless, and they'll stay with you throughout your career.

The MS in Accounting/MBA program is challenging and requires sacrifices, but the rewards are more than worth it. The education, career opportunities, and personal growth are incredible. I tell my friends and family that I'd gladly pay the tuition ten times over for the experience and connections I've gained. So, if you're considering the program, go for it—it's a fantastic investment in your future.

Q: Looking ahead, what are you most excited about?

A: I'm excited about my new role at KPMG and putting everything I've learned into practice. Beyond that, I want to grow in my public accounting career and eventually use my business skills to give back to the education system in a new way. I'm grateful for the foundation this program has given me. It's really been a transformative experience, and I can't wait to see where it takes me next.
