Two D'Amore-McKim School of Business seniors, Desmond Gray and Ricardo Ortis, celebrated their achievements in Northeastern University's Torch Scholars Program on Thursday, May 4, 2017. The program supports first-generation college students, offering full-scholarships and vital resources, such as academic advising, mentorships, and access to social events.
In the past 11 years, the program has helped more than 100 students achieve their greatest aspirations.
The recent graduates of the program include Bolanle Akinsulire, Ivana Arellano, Desmond Gray, Greykia Harris, Nicole Miller, Ricardo Ortis, Ajah Perkins, Cevalo-Pimentel, Alec Rodriguez, and Sangjukta Sen Roy.
Gray, the student speaker, reflected on his high school experiences and time at Northeastern, noting during his speech that it was at Northeastern that he found his confidence.
“It would be arrogant to say that I no longer doubt myself, but every challenge I have faced has provided me with the strength and resilience to be able to tackle the obstacles I will face in life,” Gray said. “I will take these lessons with me as I begin my career at IBM this June. I have stopped questioning myself, and started valuing the opportunities that I have been given to prove my strength in challenging situations.”
