Q: Why did a Master's in International Management make sense for you?
A: A handful of experiences led me to realize that earning a master's degree was the right next step for me. As an undergrad, I worked as a research assistant and had the opportunity to conduct fieldwork in Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria. That experience and a data internship at the Institute of Food and Agricultural Science focused on sustainable farming practices sparked my interest in global challenges and cross-border collaboration. I began to see the impact of my work and how it could contribute to solving real-world problems.
After graduation, I took a gap year and worked at an art consulting firm as the executive assistant to the founder. Working directly with international clients gave me valuable exposure to the business side of the global art market. These interactions helped me realize how much I enjoy working across cultures and solving strategic challenges. Through these experiences, I discovered my passion for international collaboration and strategic problem-solving.
I've always known I wanted to pursue my master's and now I had a focus. D'Amore-McKim stood out for its career-focused curriculum, strong career outcomes, and emphasis on experiential learning.
Q: How have you applied your classroom knowledge to business challenges?
A: The Community Impact Initiative has been incredibly rewarding, both personally and professionally. I was part of a student team working at the Unite the World with Africa Foundation, a nonprofit focused on education, healthcare, and economic development in rural Tanzania. My role involved promoting films that showcase the organization's work, researching local communities and film festivals, and reaching out to micro-influencers on Instagram.
The collaboration was a highlight. I worked with six D'Amore-McKim Master's students from different programs. For example, I collaborated closely with Cassandra, a Business Analytics student who used her data analysis skills to complement my focus on data-driven decision-making. Our teamwork allowed us to divide tasks effectively and keep the project moving forward.
This initiative expanded my understanding of marketing in a nonprofit setting, where creative, cost-effective strategies are essential. The chance to experiment with unconventional promotional tactics was invaluable in developing my strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
Q: When did you discover your passion for consulting?
A: I've been interested in consulting for some time, but my experience at D'Amore-McKim has deepened that passion and helped me take meaningful steps toward this career path. While learning about business management in class is valuable, nothing beats the insights gained from real experience. This initiative allowed me to build a client relationship and develop practical skills in a supportive environment.
Working directly with the Executive Director of Unite the World with Africa Foundation was especially beneficial. Her expertise and perspective provided unique insights into nonprofit operations and strategic decision-making. This experience strengthened my problem-solving abilities and boosted my confidence as I pursue a consulting career.
Q: Tell us about your travel elective course?
A: I enrolled in the elective Global Field Study course and traveled to Copenhagen and Iceland with 20 other graduate students. This course focused on the Nordic region's leadership in sustainable business practices. Visiting companies like Maersk, a global shipping leader, and CarbFix, a carbon capture firm, I saw firsthand how these industries balance profitability with environmental responsibility through advanced technology and innovative solutions.
While traveling, you experience the sights, but seeing the workplace and work culture offers a deeper understanding of the local culture. The Danish, for example, emphasize work-life balance, and I would love to work there someday.
The timing of my travel course was perfect because I was also involved in the Community Impact Initiative, which significantly strengthened my professional communication skills. Weekly presentations and strategy discussions at the foundation gave me the confidence to engage with senior executives during the field study and ask thoughtful questions. Both experiential learning opportunities improved my ability to articulate ideas clearly and navigate professional environments.
Q: What advice would you share with future students?
A: My biggest advice is to start early and be proactive. When I applied for the Community Impact Initiative, I signed up for the very first interview slot—and my D'Amore-McKim career advisor mentioned that this kind of initiative often indicates future success. If you have a goal, don't wait for opportunities to come to you—start working toward it now. Reach out to the D'Amore-McKim Graduate Career Center, build relationships, and take full advantage of the many resources available.
One of those resources I highly recommend is the Center for Emerging Markets. They host events featuring experts who share research and insights on global trends—often covering topics you won't find in the headlines, like education in India. These events are a great way to stay informed, expand your perspective, and connect with inspiring speakers. D'Amore-McKim offers many valuable opportunities to learn and grow—make the most of them while you're here.
