Marian Walsh, an attorney, and award-winning author, of RUN; Your Personal Guide to Winning Public Office, first ran for a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1988 as a political unknown. She won. Walsh was subsequently elected to another term in the house and then served nine consecutive terms in the Massachusetts state senate until 2011. She never lost an election. The first woman to hold both her house and senate seats, she also held ranking positions including Majority Whip. Walsh has been nominated for the prestigious John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage award, honoring those in public service “who, acting in accord with their conscience, risk their careers by pursuing a larger vision....” Marian Walsh, a graduate of Ursuline Academy, Newton College of the Sacred Heart, Suffolk University Law School, and Harvard Divinity School, has served as the Chief Administrative Officer in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, and as a public affairs consultant and leadership coach, a nonprofit leader, as well as a lecturer of ethics, leadership, nonprofit management, and law and policy at Northeastern University, and other area colleges.

Awards and Recognition

Walsh was named one of Boston's 100 Most Powerful Women by Boston Magazine in 2003. She has also been named Legislator of the Year by various groups including the Environmental League of Massachusetts, the YMCA, the Alzheimer's Association of Eastern Massachusetts, and the ALS Society of Massachusetts. She was named one of Boston's Ten Most Outstanding Young Leaders by Boston Jaycees in 1990 and was awarded the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus Abigail Adams Awards Recognition for Service in 2010.
