The Torch Scholars Program celebrated 10 years of changing lives, empowering students and recognizing the potential of chance, highlighting the accomplishments of its graduates and the possibilities the future holds for its current classes.
Northeastern's Torch Scholars Program supports first-generation college students, offering full-scholarships and vital resources such as academic advising, mentorships, and access to social events. In the past 10 years, the program has enabled 95 students to achieve their greatest aspirations.
The Torch 11 class, entering the program this fall, has 12 students.
As a result of the past 10 Torch Scholars classes, 19 students have been enrolled in the D'Amore-McKim School of Business. Among the current D'Amore-McKim Torch students, the most popular concentrations include marketing, international business, and finance.
Two student speakers told their own stories during the celebration, including Mabel Gonzalez Nunez, DMSB'20.
“A year ago today, I was graduating from St. Joe's Preparatory High School,” she said. “Never would I have imagined that I'd be standing in front of you all excited, anxious, and most importantly, jetlagged. I just returned from a study abroad trip in Morocco.”
Her experience in the program has inspired her to pursue an MBA.
Trustee Ted English, DMSB'76, CEO of Bob's Discount Furniture, cited student stories such as Gonzalez Nunez's as inspiration for supporting the program since it was founded.
