Kaan Donmez, DMSB’18, is taking over our Instagram account this week, reflecting on his co-op and student-life experiences during the last five years. Kaan moved to the U.S. during high school and has been on his quest for the American dream ever since. He is currently on co-op in Silicon Valley, California. Read more about Donmez here and be sure to follow @damoremckim Instagram beginning Monday, September 25, for a close-up look at his life at D’Amore-McKim.
At D’Amore-McKim School of Business, you’ll have the opportunity to work in co-op positions at organizations that encompass all business functions across a diverse range of industries, sectors and locations. You can participate in at least two six-month co-ops, exploring opportunities with our more than 600 employer partners located in over 25 states and around the world. Co-op positions are full-time and students receive a competitive wage. BSBA students have the opportunity to participate in both domestic and international co-ops; BSIB students are required to have a domestic co-op and an international co-op.
You’ll be assigned a co-op coordinator who helps you prepare for co-op and to identify opportunities that match your goals and interests. Before your first co-op experience, you’ll complete a one-credit course—Professional Development for Business—taught by your coordinator. You’ll get strong support in the classroom, along with one-on-one counseling, throughout the job search process. Your coordinator also works closely with employer partners in developing, enhancing and maintaining co-op positions that align with the educational goals of the college.
You’ll participate in two or three six-month paid co-ops beginning in the middle or end of your sophomore year. Co-op cycles are January to June or July to December; and you’ll alternate between classes and co-op. Co-op experiences are expected to increase in degree of difficulty and responsibility and to have specific learning outcomes. You may choose to do a third co-op, which is most likely to lead to a post-graduation job opportunity. Your employers will also provide you with feedback on your professional performance, which provides you with crucial information as you develop and mature in the business world.
