The Northeastern women's hockey team has done it again, securing their third consecutive Beanpot title in thrilling fashion. This historic achievement wouldn't have been possible without the dedication and leadership of student-athletes like Molly Griffin, DMSB '24, MSF'25, and Lisa Jönsson, DMSB '28. As proud members of the D'Amore-McKim School of Business, these two athletes have not only excelled on the ice but have also embodied the values of teamwork, perseverance, and excellence that define Northeastern. Let's take a closer look at their journeys and what this victory means to them.
Molly Griffin: A leader on and off the ice
For graduate student Molly Griffin, winning the Beanpot for the third time is a testament to the culture of excellence within Northeastern's women's hockey program. “Bringing the trophy back to Northeastern and getting to share our success with everyone feels great,” Griffin says. “The support that the school gives us is unmatched, and the fans that show up for us every game help us play our best hockey.”
Griffin's role on the team has evolved over the years, from looking up to older teammates for inspiration to now leading by example as one of the team's veterans. “Being able to win multiple Beanpots has been such a blessing,” she says. “Now, being the oldest on the team, I always try to carry myself in the same way the girls before me did because I know how much of an impact they had on me.”
Her leadership extends beyond the rink, as she credits her time as a student-athlete with shaping her career aspirations in business. “Being a student-athlete has helped shape my career aspirations because it has shown me what it takes to be successful. My time management and leadership skills have developed immensely, and those are skills that I will carry forever.”
Griffin's message to future student-athletes is one of humility and determination: “Keep your head down and put your best foot forward. Be humble, play with poise, and respect all of your opponents.”
Lisa Jönsson: A rising star with a passion for the game
For first-year standout Lisa Jönsson, winning the Beanpot was a dream come true. “It was just so incredible to be able to win the Beanpot on my first try,” Jönsson says. “Being around all the upperclassmen before these games has had a great impact on me, and I was just so happy when the clock ran out and I saw everyone jumping on the ice to celebrate with me.”
Jönsson's journey in hockey began at just three years old, and her love for the game has only grown since. “Hockey is more than just a game to me,” she says. “I've always told myself to continue to play because I love the sport and have fun, not because I feel like I have to do it.”
As a business administration and economics major, Jönsson is passionate about combining her academic and athletic pursuits. “Moving to the U.S. from Sweden gave me the best chance to combine my schoolwork and the sport I love,” she says. “I have always had an interest in how to run a business and to learn more about the process behind it.”
Jönsson hopes her Beanpot victory inspires future generations of student-athletes. “I'm hoping that the attention we got for the Beanpot is something that will continue to exist and inspire people to watch women in sport,” she said.
Griffin and Jönsson represent the heart and soul of Northeastern women's hockey. Their dedication to the sport, their team, and their academic pursuits is a shining example of what it means to be a student-athlete at Northeastern. As they continue to make history on the ice, they also carry the pride of the D'Amore-McKim community with them.
