Q: Tell us about your background.
A: I didn't originally plan to go into accounting. I studied quantitative economics because I enjoyed working with data and statistics and understanding how people and markets behave. But I sometimes struggled to see how the theories I was learning applied to the real world.
That changed when I took my first accounting class. I was drawn to its practical, application-based approach and realized I wanted to explore accounting further. As my interest in accounting grew, I began seeking opportunities to deepen my knowledge and gain more hands-on experience, which ultimately led me to D'Amore-McKim.
Q: Why did you choose D'Amore-McKim's MS in Accounting/MBA program?
A: One of the things that attracted me to the program was that it's designed for students like me, who come from non-accounting backgrounds.. Many master's in accounting programs require a certain number of accounting credits before you can enroll, but D'Amore-McKim creates a pathway to enter the field without those barriers.
I was first introduced to the program during my sophomore year, when I was still exploring whether accounting was the right fit. As I connected with students, alumni, and accounting professionals, I gained a better understanding of the field and the opportunities D'Amore-McKim offers. The strength of the Northeastern University network immediately stood out to me. Everyone I spoke with described a supportive, engaged community that actively helps students navigate their careers. That sense of connection is what made D'Amore-McKim the right choice for me.
Q: How has the Northeastern network impacted your experience?
A: The network has been incredible and has absolutely lived up to its reputation. Northeastern alumni are not only proud of their connection to the university but also genuinely invested in helping current students succeed.
During my corporate residency and throughout the recruiting process, I saw that firsthand. Alumni were always willing to answer questions, offer guidance, and share their experiences. Because the MS in Accounting/MBA program is so close-knit, there's a strong sense of community and a real commitment to helping students build their careers.
As part of my work study program, I help with alumni events. It's been really inspiring to see graduates return years later and remain so engaged with the program and its students.
Q: Tell us about your corporate residency experience.
A: I completed my corporate residencyat PwC as an assurance intern during the busy season. I had the opportunity to work on a large client engagement and collaborate with professionals across the team, which gave me exposure to the pace and responsibilities of public accounting much earlier than I expected.
Having the residency built into the middle of the 15-month program was incredibly valuable. Being able to step into a professional setting halfway through the curriculum allows students to immediately apply what they've learned in the classroom. One of the most rewarding parts for me was seeing concepts from my audit course come to life.
Our professor, a former Deloitte partner, often referenced situations we would encounter during our residencies, and it was exciting to see those lessons play out in practice. It reinforced how closely the program connects classroom learning with real-world experience.
Q: How is the program preparing you for your accounting journey?
A: The accounting profession is evolving, especially at the entry level, as automation takes over more repetitive work and creates greater opportunities for analysis and higher-level thinking. The program has prepared me well for that shift.
I took an AI management course where we learned how to prompt effectively, evaluate AI-generated information, and think critically about risk. Being able to question and assess AI outputs is becoming an increasingly important skill in the field.
The program also aligns closely with CPA licensure requirements and has been extremely helpful in preparing me for the exam. Becoming a CPA has always been a non-negotiable goal for me. I've already passed my first section, with another coming up soon.
Q: What are your career plans after graduation?
A: After graduation, I'll be returning to PwC as an Assurance Associate. I'm excited to rejoin the team I worked with during my corporate residency, where I built strong relationships and gained firsthand experience with the people, work, and environment. Returning to a team I already know feels like a natural next step, allowing me to build on what I learned during my residency as I begin my full-time career.
Q: Would you recommend the MS in Accounting/MBA program?
A: Absolutely. The combination of rigorous academics, hands-on professional experience, CPA preparation, a supportive alumni network, and access to top employers creates an incredible opportunity for students from non-accounting backgrounds.
The program opened doors I wouldn't have had otherwise and gave me the confidence, skills, and professional network to launch my career. I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering a future in accounting or business.
