Undergraduate Pass/Fail Questions

The Undergraduate Dean’s List requirements for Spring 2020 have been modified to reflect the revised pass/fail policy. Dean’s List is assessed each semester and only considers the grades earned during that one specific semester (i.e. the overall GPA is not considered for Dean’s List, the semester GPA is). A student who chooses to take all classes Pass/Fail in Spring 2020 is not eligible for Dean’s List Spring 2020.

Spring 2020 Dean’s List Policy:

  • 3.50 GPA
  • No Incompletes
  • No grades below C-
  • Not on academic probation
  • Must be carrying a full academic course load (generally 16credits)

As of Saturday 4/11/2020, the pass/fail policy has been modified to give the option for some or all classes to be graded as pass/fail. The deadline for this decision is midnight on the last day of classes, April 14, 2020. Instructions for how to petition for pass/fail can be found on the Registrar’s website.

Lecture and lab can be grouped, but they can also be separated. A one-credit lab will not keep students from choosing two four-credit courses as pass/fail. Students need to list BOTH sections on the form if they want pass/fail on both.

Latin Honors designations will be assigned according to the general guidelines published in the university catalog. Pass/Fail courses will not contribute to the overall GPA and will not impact Latin Honors designation.

Yes, they can choose two classes to be pass/fail.

If you select pass/fail, the course can count for any category.

Grades recorded on the basis of the pass/fail system do not figure in the computation of the grade-point average. Satisfactory completion of all courses taken on the pass/fail system is designated on the student’s permanent record by the letter S. Unsatisfactory grades will be designated on transcript with the letter U.

Pre-health does not recommend that students take any pre-health pre-requisite courses as pass/fail at this time.

You can find the pass/fail petition and instructions on the Registrar’s website.

Professors and advisors do not need to sign off on the petition before it is submitted. To submit the petition, email Banner-PassFailPetition@northeastern.edu.

Pass/fail grades are acceptable for CPA exams in Massachusetts. For more information, please visit the Massachusetts NASBA website.
