Students may seek funding to conduct research, launch startups, implement service-learning projects, organize conferences, or pursue other innovative initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This semester, CEM funded four projects spanning healthcare, infrastructure finance, clean energy, and digital health across Ghana, West Africa, Kenya, and South Korea. Grant recipients represent four colleges and schools at Northeastern University. Before coming to Northeastern, he spent nearly two years at PwC Guinea (now Baker Tilly Guinea) as a Deals and Strategy Associate, where he worked on infrastructure transactions across West Africa totaling over $1 billion in capital investment. That experience, structuring road concessions, port deals, and public-sector projects in environments where standard financial data is limited or unreliable, became the foundation for this project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Alpha's research will produce three to five detailed case studies examining how private capital actually gets deployed in emerging market infrastructure deals. His central question is one that standard financial models cannot answer: how do investors make decisions when the data they normally rely on does not exist? Each case study will trace the full arc of a deal, from the initial decision to invest, through how the transaction was structured, to what happened when conditions changed. His project focuses on a fundamental challenge across sub-Saharan Africa: even as countries like Kenya have made major progress in renewable energy, many communities still lack reliable electricity, and it is not always clear where new investment would do the most good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To address this, Chigozirim will build a comprehensive dataset of Kenya's renewable energy infrastructure, including electrification rates, grid coverage, and energy capacity by region. Using geospatial analysis and statistical modeling tools, he will map where infrastructure gaps are largest and where targeted investment could have the greatest impact on electricity access. He will also attend conferences focused on African innovation and development to connect his data work with the perspectives of entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers working in this space firsthand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The project will culminate in a research report and a data visualization dashboard summarizing his findings, which he plans to present to the Northeastern community. She grew up in South Korea and has prior research experience studying health communication and traditional medicine practices there. Her project examines a question that has become increasingly relevant as countries around the world expand digital health services: does the way those services are designed and displayed in real healthcare settings actually help patients use them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">South Korea offers a useful place to study this question. It has one of the most advanced digital healthcare systems in the world, with widespread use of telemedicine, online appointment platforms, mobile health applications, and digital kiosks. But advanced infrastructure does not automatically mean easy access. Research has found that many patients in South Korea, particularly older adults, experience difficulty and stress when navigating digital health systems in clinical settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Yejin will conduct structured observations across hospitals, clinics, and public health centers in four districts of Seoul, documenting how digital health tools are presented, how clearly they guide patients, and whether their design supports or limits access to care. Led this year by Lauren Ayres, Sarah Juvera, and Saule Kairyte, all members of the class of 2027, the organization is receiving Srinivasan Family Award funding for the fourth consecutive year. Each prior cycle has supported a different phase of what has become a long-term, in-country partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Over the past four years, IGH has built working relationships with four Ghanaian hospitals and health centers, established student chapters at three Ghanaian universities, and delivered a series of functional prototypes designed to address equipment shortages identified directly by clinical staff. During a trip to Ghana in March 2026, eight Northeastern students and a faculty advisor delivered completed devices, conducted needs assessments, and held a joint event with partner university chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This year's initiative marks a new stage for the organization. Rather than focusing primarily on prototyping new devices, IGH will concentrate on moving existing ones toward commercialization and broader use. Two devices are at the center of this effort: a neonatal phototherapy unit designed to treat jaundice in newborns, and a maternal wellness mobile app that was deployed to staff at one partner health center this year and is now being adapted for use at additional clinics. The team will also develop new prototypes identified through their most recent needs assessment, including detachable stirrups for gynecological care and an oxygen purity analyzer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Alongside its device work, IGH has established a new partnership with MakersPlace, a community center in Accra that provides engineering and science education to young students. Through this collaboration, IGH members will engage local youth in hands-on learning connected to health technology and problem-solving.
