{"id":1415,"date":"2016-06-09T14:56:49","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T18:56:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/damore-mckim.northeastern.edu\/cem\/news\/successes-and-struggles-amid-the-volatility-in-emerging-markets\/"},"modified":"2024-07-15T10:42:57","modified_gmt":"2024-07-15T14:42:57","slug":"successes-and-struggles-amid-the-volatility-in-emerging-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/damore-mckim.northeastern.edu\/cem\/news\/successes-and-struggles-amid-the-volatility-in-emerging-markets\/","title":{"rendered":"Successes and struggles amid the volatility in emerging markets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;Center for Emerging Markets&nbsp;held its seventh annual symposium on Tuesday, June 7, highlighting the changing, volatile, market conditions many companies face in emerging economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ravi Ramamurti, center director and Distinguished Professor of International Business and Strategy, opened the symposium with a summation of the current state of emerging markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nariman Behravesh, chief economist for Massachusetts-based IHS Global Insight, and symposium keynote speaker highlighted the \u201cperfect storm\u201d of the 2000's market conditions that lead to the downturn and turbulent trends. This \u201cgolden decade\u201d was often characterized by rising prices, off-shoring businesses and the decline of global interest rates, followed by a brief upswing after the global financial collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now though, he said there is a \u201cgreat diver\u00adgence in the per\u00adfor\u00admance of emerging mar\u00adkets,\u201d as some countries such as Russia and Venezuela suffer through recessions, while more positive market trends are emerging in the Middle East and other regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other symposium speakers included Alberto Car\u00advalho, pres\u00adi\u00addent of Proctor &amp; Gamble-\u200b\u200bBrazil; David Nar\u00addone, DMSB'79, MBA'82, pres\u00adi\u00addent and CEO of Hemaraj Land and Devel\u00adop\u00adment Co. Ltd. in Thai\u00adland; Karim Smadi, DMSB'93, man\u00adaging director, Reda Indus\u00adtrial Mate\u00adrials in Dubai&nbsp;and Stephen Hayes, president and CEO of the Cor\u00adpo\u00adrate Council on&nbsp;Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"
