{"id":997,"date":"2024-05-23T15:28:17","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T19:28:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/damore-mckim.northeastern.edu\/cem\/events\/state-capitalism-and-the-firm-conference\/"},"modified":"2024-07-18T15:36:30","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T19:36:30","slug":"state-capitalism-and-the-firm-conference","status":"publish","type":"dmsb_event","link":"https:\/\/damore-mckim.northeastern.edu\/cem\/events\/state-capitalism-and-the-firm-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Conference: State Capitalism and the Firm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This&nbsp;mini-conference&nbsp;organized by Northeastern University, Loughborough University&nbsp;in&nbsp;London, and Brandeis University, brought together scholars from a variety of academic disciplines to explore how state capitalism works in&nbsp;the&nbsp;present day. It examined new forms of state capitalism that often cross the boundaries that traditionally separated state enterprises and private businesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This separation was reflected in prior research focused on&nbsp;the&nbsp;antecedents and consequences of&nbsp;the&nbsp;nationalization and privatization of companies. However, the distinctions&nbsp;between state and private, between political logic and market logic become&nbsp;blurry when we consider some of the companies that raised to prominence during last 10-20 years. Such hybrid organizations can be found all over the world, but they play a particularly prominent role in emerging economies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During this mini-conference, topics addressed included the internationalization of state-owned firms, state-owned business groups, investment strategies of sovereign wealth funds,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the effect of state ownership on innovation patterns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">View&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/damore-mckim.northeastern.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/StateCapitalism_Schedule_1Aug2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agenda<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Keynote speakers:<\/strong>\u00a0<br><a href=\"https:\/\/web.northeastern.edu\/ruthaguilera\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Ruth Aguilera,\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>Distinguished Professor, International Business and Strategy, D'Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University\u00a0<br><a href=\"https:\/\/mitsloan.mit.edu\/faculty\/directory\/yasheng-huang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Yasheng Huang<\/strong><\/a>, Epoch Foundation Professor of International Management, Professor, Global Economics and Management, MIT Sloan\u00a0<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnson.cornell.edu\/faculty-research\/faculty\/cm794\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Christopher Marquis<\/strong><\/a>, Samuel C.
