About the Event<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Center for Emerging Markets at Northeastern University hosted a research lecture by Professor Jo\u00e3o Albino-Pimentel exploring the intersection of business power and political influence in emerging economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drawing on a unique dataset of Ukrainian tycoons, this talk examined why powerful business leaders engage in political activity such as funding parties or running for office. The research explored how institutional conditions, political vulnerability, and media ownership shape the ways business elites participate in political markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lecture offered new insight into how political and economic power interact in developing democracies and how emerging market institutions influence the strategies of business leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jo\u00e3o Albino-Pimentel | Associate Professor of International Business
Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Jo\u00e3o Albino-Pimentel is a Moore Fellow and Associate Professor of International Business at the Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina. His research explores how firms navigate geopolitical risk, stakeholder pressures, and institutional complexity across countries through non-market strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His work has been published in leading journals, including Strategic Management Journal<\/em>, Journal of International Business Studies<\/em>, Research Policy<\/em>, and Global Strategy Journal<\/em>. Albino-Pimentel serves on the editorial review boards of several academic journals and is an SRF Dissertation Scholar. Before joining USC, he was an Assistant Professor of Strategy and International Business at Copenhagen Business School and a Research Scholar at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He holds a Ph.D. in Strategic Management from HEC Paris.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
