About the Event<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mexico's ruling party, the\u00a0Partido Revolucionario Institucional\u00a0<\/em>created a new type of citizen in the 1970s: \u00a0the consumer citizen. In the context of political and economic instability, the political elite passed significant political reform and innovative new economic policies to shore up its support among the middle classes.\u00a0These included new consumer rights, new forms of consumer credit, and a new tax on consumption.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Louise E. Walker<\/a> presented her research on these political and economic programs, and discussed the history of Mexico's emerging middle classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
