About the Internal Business Case Competition

Student teams of four or five members have five hours on Friday to read a case, complete an analysis and prepare a presentation. All teams are given the same case which they prepare by drawing on the skills they develop throughout their education. On Saturday morning, each team makes a 10-minute presentation to a panel of judges. The judges include successful executives representing companies in the Boston area, each a member of our Northeastern Community. The judges then score each team and the results are tallied with the top team from each bracket advancing to the final round. In the final round, the top teams present again in front of the judges and audience with a 15-minute Q&A. Again, the scores are tallied and the winners are announced Saturday evening.

Students are given the opportunity to speak one on one with the judges after their presentations in order to receive feedback and advice for the future in order to learn and grow from the competition experience. Students are also able to network and speak with judges and distinguished guests throughout the competition.

Preliminary Round

During the Preliminary Round, the team of judges will be divided into subpanels with two student hosts to oversee the presentation room. Each subpanel will be responsible to evaluate one bracket of the competition. After the completion of all preliminary presentations, judges will provide each team within their bracket a 10-minute feedback session where Judge’s will provide constructive criticism on aspects of the presentation and case recommendation. The scores will then be tallied by the IBCC Planning committee and one team from each bracket will advance to the final round.

Final Round

During the Final Round, all judges will reconvene as the full Judging Panel to evaluate the presentations of the Finalist teams. The Finalists will be scored using the same rubric as in the Preliminary Round; however, additional questions from the full judging panel should elicit more detailed explanations or identify additional weaknesses in arguments. Schedule of Events

The Spring 2012 IBCC Schedule will be posted in March of 2012.

Competition Rules

The rules presented here are subject to modification. All participants will be notified before the case competition of any changes to the format and a final version will be presented to each participant before the beginning of the case competition.

To uphold the integrity of the competition and the results, all competitors must abide by the strictest standards of honesty and professional conduct. Any violation of competition rules will result in automatic disqualification.

For full competition rules, click here.

To qualify to compete in the IBCC, you must be a current undergraduate student at Northeastern University. There are two ways you can compete:

1. Enroll in the Advanced Strategy Course
2. Sign up as an external team with 3-5 other qualified students.

As a student in the Advanced Strategy Course, the course will prepare you for the competition and automatically enroll you in the competition. As an external team, you will be offered all of the resources given to the students enrolled in the course and a mentor for the Northeastern University Huntington Management Consulting competition team. If you do not have a full team, you are still able to register as an individual and be assigned to a team.

All Northeastern University student organizations are encouraged to submit a team to compete.

For important registration dates and information, check the homepage January 2012.

The IBCC Judging Panel will consist of judges drawn from the Boston Community and distinguished Northeastern University Alumni.

Overview

Judges for the IBCC will be evaluating each competing team's identification and assessment of key issues in the case, depth of analysis, clarity of explanations, choice of recommendations, and overall presentation delivery. Each aspect of the presentation will be scored on a numerical scale, with the teams ranked by the final sum of both preliminary and final round scores.

The case for the competition will be sent to judges one week prior to the competition. A briefing session will be held for all judges the morning of the Preliminary Round. Judges nametags, name cards, packets and scoring rubrics will be distributed at that time.

Preliminary Round

During the Preliminary Round, the team of judges will be broken into subpanels with two student hosts to oversee the presentation room.

Final Round

During the Final Round, all judges will reconvene as the full Judging Panel to evaluate the presentations of the three Finalist teams. The Finalists will be scored using the same rubric as in the Preliminary Round; however, additional questions from the full judging panel should elicit more detailed explanations or identify additional weaknesses in arguments.
