From the desk of the president of Beta Alpha Psi

  • Beta Alpha Psi - 1Beta Alpha Psi is excited to welcome 40 new initiates to our roster. As an honor society for Accounting, Finance, and MIS majors, BAP has always been a dynamic networking organization. The 2011 calendar year brought the elimination of activities period and resulted in weekly meetings moving to Tuesday nights. Strong firm connections made in past years and their strong desire to hire co-op students enabled us to attract speakers during this different time period.

For officers, the semester began on August 5th when five executive board members attended the BAP National Conference in Denver, Colorado. Our officers met board members and accounting experts from across the country. Based on the ideas shared at the conference, we diversified our weekly schedule to include internal audit and finance speakers, introducing our members to a wider array of career opportunities.

Beta Alpha Psi - 2With Big Four interviews for spring co-op students occurring in the first week of October, our initiates and current members had a strong interest in obtaining face-time with these firms early on. During the last week of September, we brought 50 members onsite to PwC and Deloitte where we participated in an information session and office tour, and networked with firm employees. Other events include weekly meetings as well as co-sponsoring the Institute of Internal Auditors Panel Night on December 1st.

To me and many of our members, the most memorable BAP moment was our participation in NU Service Day.  Ironically enough, BAP was assigned the most creative task of them all – decorating lanterns with Spontaneous Celebrations to be used as fundraising for the upcoming Jamaican Pond Parade. Bright and early on an October Saturday, upwards of 30 members transformed 2-liter bottles into “well-decorated” candle lanterns. Although a struggle for some of us accountants, it was a great opportunity to give back to our Boston community.

Beta Alpha Psi - 3As the semester wraps up, we look forward to initiating all 40 of our candidates; they have shown professionalism, intelligence, and spontaneity through our events thus far and we look forward to their future contributions to the BAP network.
